Biography

Alejandro is a microbiologist with a Ph.D. in Computational and Systems Biology from Washington University School of Medicine, focusing on the human gut virome's metagenomic analysis and its impact on health. He also holds a Master's in Molecular Microbiology from Universidad de los Andes. He is currently an Associate Professor at Universidad de los Andes, leading the Microbial Ecology and Computational Biology research group. Currently he is chair of the undergraduate programs in Biology and Microbiology, and previously chaired the M.Sc. Computational Biology program. Additionally, Alejandro led the Max Planck Tandem Group in Computational Biology and have published extensively in the fields of Microbial Ecology, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Bioinformatics education. His passion lies in advancing viral research, uncovering the human virome's complexities, and its implications for health, eager to contribute to this rapidly evolving field. He joined the ICTV Bacteria viruses subcommittee on 2020 and the Executive Committee as an elected member in 2023.
